“Extend Yourself.” These were the two words written on a little green laminated card in my father’s wallet, which he carried around for years. He received this card a long time ago from Reverend Dale Turner, a Seattle-area minister, and both of these men lived their lives in honor of these words. It’s a motto about kindness, about living a life of intention, and most importantly, about giving back to those around you. It’s about going a little further than necessary, for the benefit of someone else.
“Extend Yourself.” It’s easy to say, but much harder to do. It’s an invitation for all of us at Marrowstone to remember that every interaction, from owner to employee to guest, offers the opportunity and responsibility to connect with integrity. Extending ourselves in service, and with kindness, is at the root of all interactions here at the Inn. And ultimately, it’s about asking one another how we can offer our best to everyone who comes here.
By its nature, Marrowstone Inn is out of the way. Just the process of getting here requires extending yourself. It’s a subtle but powerful reminder that the land itself offers—a reminder that going out of the way is exactly what we should be offering each other, our guests, and our community—everyone who comes to visit this small swath of land at the tip of a little-known island. It’s a place we love. Our home and our getaway in one. And it’s a place we look forward to sharing with you.
These days, every remodel and new addition to the property has a little of this philosophy built in—how can we go a little further to make this place right for you? How can we extend ourselves in your direction, in everything we do?
